Il Club di Vela di Lilongwe quest'anno ha un boom di soci, il paese è in piena crescita economica e così qualcuno si può permettere una giornata di pesca sulle acque del Lilongwe River a pochi chilometri dal centro cittadino.

This year Lilongwe Yacht Club has seen an increase in its memberships, the country is in full economic growth therefore some people can afford a day fishing on Lilongwe River, few miles from downtown.

E’ domenica. Nel villaggio si prepara il pranzo e i bambini pestano con il mortaio le arachidi. Ricche di proteine sono un nutrimento importante per molte famiglie africane ed  una pietanza tradizionale del Malawi.

Annette “prega” che la macina crei la farina. Si è alzata presto stamattina, come molti bambini ha attraversato i campi  con la mamma per arrivare alla macina e ritornare con la farina.

Il Ghana si prepara all’incontro con la Serbia, tutta l’Africa nera si raccoglie per tifare Ghana! TV “a palla” ovunque ed  il pallone come simbolo che aggrega tutti i popoli del Mondo. Forza Africa!

La bicicletta è il mezzo di trasporto più diffuso del Continente. Viene importata dall’India e assemblata in piccole botteghe artigianali. A volte è l‘unico collegamento tra villaggi tagliati fuori dal mondo e spesso genera piccoli business come la compravendita di legna per cucinare.

Bicycle is the most common means of transportation in Africa. It’s imported from India and put together in small workshops. Sometimes is the only connection between villages which are situated in the middle of nowhere and begets small trades like the sale of wood for cooking.

Nassinde ha circa 60 anni, è venuta da lontano per far visita alla figlia che non vede da due anni. La saggezza di un’anziana in famiglia è sempre rispettata.

Nassinde is about 60 years old; she has travelled a long distance to visit her daughter whom she hasn’t seen for two years. In a family the wisdom of the elderly is always respected.

Autoritratto con modella. Con una splendida luce, uno sfondo perfetto ed una sorprendente modella, mi sono trasformato da semplice spettatore esterno ad osservatore interno tracciando i contorni di ciò che si trova oltre l’obiettivo.

African hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris). Il riccio africano è presente nel Continente con 4 specie ed è più piccolo di quello europeo. Animale notturno e crepuscolare si nutre di piccoli invertebrati, termiti e millepiedi.

The African Hedgehog (Altelerix Albiventris) is present in 4 species throughout Africa and it is smaller than the European one. Nocturnal and crepuscular animal it feeds in small invertebrates, termites and millipede.

Le due immagini, spezzate da un filo, sono in corto circuito, ma profondamente connesse. Rispecchiano in modo ambiguo la realtà dei soggetti che sono soli nella quotidianità, ma uniti nello spazio/specchio del barbiere.

Two images broke by a wire, go short circuit but are deeply linked. They ambiguously mirror the reality of the subjects which are alone in everyday life but are united in the barber’s space/mirror.

Connochaetes taurinus, commonly called “Gnu”, is in a constant falling caused by the interference of the human activity and since 2008 the Gnu has been red listed by the IUCN as risk species.

Baobab. Una volta il baobab era l'albero più bello della terra. Si vantava di continuo dei suoi profumatissimi fiori e dei dolci frutti, denigrando e molestando gli altri alberi che alla fine rivolsero una supplica agli dei. Il dio della foresta stanco delle lamentele, per punizione lo sollevò da terra e lo conficcò nel terreno a testa in giù!

Baobab. Once upon a time the Baobab was the most beautiful tree on earth. It continuously used to boast of its fragrant flowers and sweet fruits denigrating and molesting all other trees which pleaded the Gods for mercy. The God of the Forest tired of these complaints punished the Baobab uprooting it from the ground and putting it back upside down!

Come in uno specchio. Nel gesto di specchiarsi di una giovane donna maasai l'occasione per "riflettere" sull'immagine che l'Africa mostra di sè e sull'immagine che noi percepiamo. "Come in uno specchio".

Just like in a mirror. In the act of looking herself at the mirror a young Maasai woman is the chance of “reflecting” the image that Africa want to show and the image that we perceive “just like in a mirror”.

Salt. Salary is at the lowest for salt workers. Salt is a resource of fundamental importance in a corner of Africa where they feed on a paradox: salary (from the Latin word “salarium” ancient Roman way of retribution with salt) When the root of its word, salt, is not its essence.

Loxodonta africana. Ogni elefante ucciso dai bracconieri per il suo avorio vale circa 30.000 euro. Ogni anno si ammazzano circa 40.000 elefanti, tonnellate di avorio illegale dirette ai mercati di Cina e Giappone. In 10 o forse 15 anni l'elefante africano scomparirà.

Loxodonta africana. Each elephant killed by poacher is worth about €30,000 for its ivory. Each year 40,000 elephants are killed and tons of ivory are headed towards the Chinese and the Japanese markets. In 10, maybe 15 years the African elephant will disappear.

Il silenzio degli sguardi. Oltre il velo, il silenzio degli sguardi simbolizza la segregazione dei sessi in una società dove vecchie forme di predominio portano ancora all'esclusione delle donne.

The silence of the stares. Beyond the veil the silence of the stares represents the segregation of sexes in a society where old forms of supremacy still lead to the exclusion of the woman.

La sfida. L'Africa è un continente in cui milioni di africani hanno la possibilità di essere artefici del loro futuro. Una sfida in cui credere ed un forte segnale di autonomia in un continente giovane che può ancora emergere. Se la sfida non viene accettata l'Africa continuerà a non essere mai libera.

The challenge. Africa is a continent where millions of African people are the authors of their destiny. A challenge to believe in and a strong sign of autonomy in a young continent that can still rise. If the challenge is not accepted then Africa will never be free.

How to make Africa smile? "Anche se governata da vecchi, l'Africa é un continente giovane. Metà della sua popolazione é sotto i 16 anni e più del 70% é nata dopo l'indipendenza. I nati liberi sono più inclini a dare la colpa della condizione in cui l'Africa si trova agli attuali governanti e non ai governi coloniali del passato. Man mano che i giovani crescono e cominciano a votare, la loro scelta cadrà su leader pragmatici di cui l'Africa ha bisogno. Questa é la speranza".                     The Economist.

"Although governed by the elderly, Africa is a young continent. Half of its population is under 16 and more than 70% were born after independence. The free-born tend to blame the actual Government and not the ancient colonialist for the present conditions.
